"Going Under: Self-Hypnosis for Pain Relief"
Dr. David Spiegel, Professor at Stanford University School of Medicine in California, says: "By learning how to attain a hypnotic state on their own, people can gain control over what’s happening in their bodies."
After guiding his clients into hypnosis the first time, Dr. Spiegel teaches clients how to achieve self- hypnosis. As all hypnosis is really self- hypnosis, professionals can teach clients to narrow their state of focused attention, guiding themselves into hypnosis, bypassing their conscious mind. In this way, hypnosis can be used to alter the persons perception of pain.
Spiegel teaches his clients techniques such as physical relaxation, sensory alteration and distraction in order to bring them to a place where they have more control in managing chronic pain issues.
