Using Hypnosis To Ease Childbirth

Relaxing Into Trance-Like State May Cut Pain, Need For Drugs

Hypnobirthing, a more pain free and relaxing way to experience childbirth is becoming more of a mainstream option among mothers-to-be across the country. "Hypnobirthing teaches women to give birth in a peaceful way, allowing their body,--and their baby-- to do the work for them," says Yvonne Schwab, founder of the San Hose Hypnobirthing Center.  "Most of the time, women don’t know what to expect during childbirth, and we’ve been conditioned to be afraid of pain."

The language of hypnobirthing suggests using words like "discomfort" instead of "pain", and "surges" instead of "contractions." Changing the language can help to provide a more comfortable birth process and the environment surrounding it.

Pregnant mothers and their partners are taught how to hypnotize themselves and use deep breathing techniques to prepare themselves for a more natural and comfortable birthing experience.
